Music

So a couple months ago, I had a music experience like I’ve never had before. Now I love music! It’s something that I’ve always been involved in, even though I’m shy and hate being singled out when it comes to singing. I don’t think I would even call it a passion, I just know that it’s something that I couldn’t live without. My whole family is musical in fact. If you can’t sing, you play an instrument, and if you can do both? Well you’re blessed. You’ve literally got the best of both worlds.

The people that I grew up listening to! My mother literally had the most CD’s and Vinyl’s, and even then I know a lot of those songs. Theres one CD in particular which broke when one of my sisters got their first car. Before that however, my Mother and then I used to play that CD a lot, to the point where I can tell you how the entire CD goes without even having to hear. I mean I can sing or say things exactly as they are on the CD perfect every time! And then there is church. I go to a church where music is a big part of the service. I’m talking about days filled with practice for just one day. Music might actually slyly be my life, because I even studied it. But even with all this exposure to music, I still had never heard what I heard that day.

I went to church one Sabbath, like normal, with a couple of friends. The main difference being that we were going to the neighbouring church instead of our home church, because I choir from America was coming over to sing. The Aeolians. If you’ve never heard of them, they are a choir from Oakwood University. It’s an Adventist University where a lot of amazing singers have come from. Ever heard of Take 6? Amazing! One of my dad’s favourite groups. This group can put together arrangements that you would never even think was possible. And the sounds that come out of their mouths?! They were the first people to let me know of the vocal ranges that guys can have, because some of those notes that they hit are high! I even struggle sometimes and I’m a soprano! Go and have a listen and you’ll see what I’m talking about, their old stuff especially.

Anyway, Oakwood University Aeolians. They’ve been coming to the UK for years, but I’ve never really paid attention to them. However, my friend wanted to see them, so I thought I might as well tag along. I already knew that it wasn’t going to be an ordinary Sabbath, but never did I expect that I would experience what I did. They sang about five different songs, and about half way through the first one I was ready to cry. I was literally fighting back the tears for the rest of the service. They sang with an 8 part harmony if I’m not mistaken. I had heard of it prior to that day, but to hear it in real life? OH MY DAYS!!! Literally out of this world. It’s almost like I went to church with angels! Not to mention, I haven’t enjoyed church like that in a long time. It was amazing. Their sound is one of a kind, different but amazing. Sitting there listening to them made me truly appreciate music, and the blessing that I have to be able to hear such sounds.

I have to see them when they come again. It was that good! They went on to qualify for The Choir of the World competition in Wales, winning both the youth category and then going on to become the choir of the world! I’ve actually heard that it’s something that they enter every year, and if I’m correct they are actually undefeated. Imagine being that good. I’m telling you guys, it was out of this world and I don’t even listen to that kind of music! I do appreciate different genres. I’ve heard some serious tunes, but what I heard that Sabbath was something I have never really paid attention to. I had to go and look them up when I went home, and as a result, their version of Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing is a favourite. Absolutely beautiful! Check them out.

That day was too good!
