She is a beast!
It’s a whole week after I saw her and I’m still in shock at what I witnessed last Monday. It is literally one of those moments that you wish you could go through again. It put me on the biggest high so early on in the week, that everything after that was literally an anti-climax.
Those who know me well will know that I love music! I’ve always been around it. I’ve been singing in groups, choirs and by myself for as long as I can remember. I have loads of pictures and videos showing me singing at church. I even have one of me singing whilst my Dad played the guitar at an age no older than 5. I’ve been singing in praise teams for as long as I can remember and even joined the choir at my university. I just love music. I actually don’t know what I would do without it. New music makes me so happy, good new music that is. The things that musicians and producers do, to me it’s mind blowing. But even with all of this, I’d never want to do it professionally. My end goal is actually to be a solicitor. I just love how music makes me feel.
There are a range of different people that I love to listen to. So many songs! I actually have too many favourites. My all time favourite artists though are Masego, J Cole and H.E.R, but I have additional favourite songs from Rayana Jay, Kadeem Tyrell, Marie Dahlstrom, Noname, Jaz Karis, BJ The Chicago Kid, Ty Dolla Sign and Mahalia. There’s more and that’s not even counting Gospel. Lol, if I was to sit here and name all the people that have given me some great music, we would be here forever! Because you know after all of the current ones, I would still have to go back and bring up people like Etta James and Sam Cooke! Music is actually wild!
In saying that, I’ve never been to a live show where the artist has sounded just like their track plus more. I’ve been to a show where the musicians gave you the exact same feeling as the track. Jason Nelson, ‘Pour Out Your Sprit’. I saw this song live and had never heard the song before. When I went to go and search it up, the album version gave me the same excitement as what I had seen live. The musicians slayed me live and on the track. But that’s musicians. Everyone knows vocals is a completely different thing. Not everyone can do the live singing. But let me tell you, H.E.R live is amazing! She slayed me with runs just like the track and more. There was a band instead of a backing track and yet she sounded exactly like the songs on her EP’s! I don’t even know how to put what I experienced into words.
Now I know there are plenty people that can do this and more, but there was something about her live show that just had/has me lashed. Maybe it’s because on top of all this, she gave us a whole band and more. In a show that was probably about 45 minutes, H.E.R slayed us with vocals, a live band, bv’s who were not only amazing singers but some serious hype men, and then her, herself slaying the keys, bass, drums and acoustic guitar! BROOOOOOO?! Imma really need this laptop to learn the word ‘slaying’ because I’m tired of it auto-correcting it to ‘stayed’ lol I actually can’t seem to find a better word right now.
I will really be seeing her again because I. Was. In. Awe! There is even a video done by my best friend who was in fact recording H.E.R singing, but managed to catch me screaming in response to one serious run. It was more of a startled scream than anything, because I really wasn’t expecting it. She did a run that the organ followed to a ‘T’. I was literally shook because wow! It’s one thing to hear an amazing singer on a track but to hear them live with their musicians also lashing you?! It’s a whole different experience!
This is why I could never get tired of music. There’s always something new to experience. I’ve seen Omarion, J Hus, Baseman, MoStack, Jason Nelson, Burna Boy, Hardy Caprio, The Walls Group, Sona, The Compozers, Mr Eazi, One Acen, Afro B, Shekinah, The Aeolians, BXRBER, Ella Mai, Chance the Rapper, Kojo Funds, Yxng Bane, Chipmunk and now H.E.R (slyly feel like I’m missing someone) more or less in that order. With every new live performance that I attend, it just gets better and better. Music just continues to give me life and at this point, I’m just gonna have to marry a musician. I think that’s just where my life is heading, because who else is gonna understand me musically at the level that I need them to? I mean looking at all the guys I’ve really been interested in, amongst other stuff, it was their musical interest that had me. For example, the recent guy that I was in a situation with, when you look at appearance, he wasn’t at all what I wanted. Don’t get me wrong, the guy is lovely and is a gentleman! But out of everything, it was his love for music that kept me, not to mention he plays my favourite instrument and oh how he plays it well!
To have someone who shares similar interests and who you can bounce off with when it comes to the music, is what I need in life. Especially seeing as I had that, like where do I actually go after that? Sigh. That’s a whole other discussion in itself.
Music man. It’s a beautiful thing. And if you haven’t seen H.E.R, I would strongly recommend that you see her, because like I said before, girl is a BEAST!
