So I’ve started a community with a good friend of mine. Aaahhh! Scary.
We both lost our mothers, at different stages of our lives, but are in the same place of tryna figure it out and navigate this life without them
It’s funny because this all came out of a weekend that was just supposed to be a casual catch up. Emphasis on the word ‘casual’! But through said catch up, we realised we’re both having the same feelings and both have been looking for/needing a community to help us get through. So we decided to start our own. Again, scary! But dare I say God’s timing? Because literally days before, my cousin who also recently lost her mum was sharing how she found a podcast on Instagram of a girl speaking on the exact situation we’re in.
In fact whilst discussing our plan, who we want to cater to, what we want to do, we realised we know so many people who are in the same place. So many people who have lost a mum, a dad, a nan. So many people just like us. Listing out names was actually lowkey heartbreaking, because a good handful of the people I know lost a parent before even turning 20; development years without one of the people we needed to develop.
So we’ve started our community, which is also not exclusively for us ladies by the way. You men are more than welcome too. In this new normal of life, we have to find healthy ways to get through and learn how to live with the grief. Holding it in definitely ain’t it. In fact, I recently found out I have fibroids and even more recently found out that holding trauma in the body can be a huge contributor. But that’s for another day.
So with that I bring you, “Their Memory, Our Love”.
The purpose?
A community for people who have lost a parent or parent figure and desire to be around other people who get it. Someone to confirm you’re not mad, who gives you the space to feel your feelings and express yourself without judgement. Someone who doesn’t try to fix how you feel or what you feel. Because it can never be fixed. The only way to fix it is to bring that person back. We’re literally in this for life now. So my friend and I want it to be a space for likeminded people, and also help others who aren’t in the same place, to understand how we feel.
That being said though, we don’t want it to be all doom and gloom. Yes we lost our favourite person, but it doesn’t have to be all sad. We want to remember the happy things too, the things that make us smile and the good things they left us with.
And for the days where we don’t wanna talk at all? A space where we can just enjoy life. Because sometimes, we just want to be.
Bare with us though because again, scary. But we’ve decided to feel the fear and do it anyway.
So if you need this, join us. If you know someone who does, share it with them and for you reading this, follow us. Let’s get through this together.
They may no longer be here, but their memory remains and so does our love for them.
Their memory. Our love. Always. 🤍
